Good but could be better

The game can keep you entertained for a while, which is a good thing. But there are many tiny things that annoy me, which make the game less enjoyable for me.

- The music gets annoying very fast. A mute button would be a good thing, or maybe different tracks to choose from.
- The background gets boring very quickly, as there is nothing to look at.
- Highly subjective, but that "smiley face" is annoying to look at. But on the other hand, what else could you have chosen as a "character" for this game? I really don't know. I just thought I point out I don't like that smiley face. ^^

Well, the review seems to be very negative now, but the game IS enjoyable and challenging without being overly unfair or punishing the player too hard.

Thanks, i will definetly pay more attention to it in my next projects :P

Tbh, i wasn't thinking about making it into a game at all.
at first, it was just to learn action script and practice, but i made a few different levels, some trouble shooting and bam! ^^

Background needs work

It's the same problem as with the pre-version of this game: The background makes it difficult to see what's going on. The platforms almost vanish and it's very hard to see the enemies shots.

However, the issue with "sticking to the ceiling" didn't occur here, so it's a good thing you found a way to get rid of that bug.

Overall, the game still can be worthwhile, but I think you should work on the backgrounds (or rather the colouring scheme of the plattforms) a bit.

shrimpchris responds:

I'll be sure to work on more visible platforms in the future!

Glitchy

The good thing is that I can see that you really tried to create something that is fun to play and didn't submit some half-assed finished flash. Ok, this isn't really finished, since it has a "V1.2" in the title, but I can tell you put some effort into it.

The controls work quite well, even though I would appreciate it if I could map the controls myself. For me the Y and Z key are switched, so it's very inconvenient to press Z for jump and X for shoot.

The are some obvious glitches with the game. For example it's easy to get stuck in the platforms. But sometimes I can see bullets from shots I fired quite a while ago. I guess it's because I didn't "see" the bullet anymore, so it just lingered there until I came by again. Maybe the bullets should have some sort of "time to live", so they automatically vanish from the game after a set amount of time.

Also, the colours of the plattforms aren't too good. The background is mostly blue, so the also blue plattforms are a bit hard to make out sometimes.

Overall, the game has it's flaws but can turn into something worthwhile if you clean it up a little.

A few things you mentioned (like the bullet thing) were because I forgot to mess with some properties of the objects. I'm just gonna fix a few minor things when I find time, then I'm done with this game since I have more important projects. Thanks for the Review!

Not too much replay value

Okay, now that I've beaten the other guido the game doesn't seem to offer that much replay value. I mean, the game is fun to play. The graphics are nice and the controls work fine. But the setup only works for one or two games before I get bored of it.

Also, the block button doesn't seem to work after the cutscenes, I always got punched once before I could block again.

Also, what the hell is Jersey Shore? ^^

YoinK responds:

according to your medals earned... you didn't even perform a super punch. Hold your mouse button and release for super punch abilities. There's replay value if you haven't earned all the medals. Jersey Shore is a reality show on MTV.

Good game

The gameplay is a bit slow, I think. Hank and Sanford move a bit slow. But I liked the idea of being able to switch between the characters, that was a cool idea. Would've been even cooler if the "inactive" character would help me in battle, though and not just stand around watching how I get beaten up, heh.

The graphics are pretty good. I like the backgrounds a lot, you put a good amount of details in there.

The musical choice is very fitting for a madness themed submission, so good work here.

Overall, the game is fun to play, but the characters could move a bit faster.

Wow, this is actually very addictive. I like how the aim is so slow at the beginning of the game, makes it really interesting. Even though I took the easy way out and maxed accuracy before spending points anywhere else. ^^

I like how we can upgrade our "weapon" after each level, this makes the game far more interesting as if our weapon would stay the same all the time.
I also like the various achievements here, like the combo medal, etc. .

Later on the game gets quite hard, with all the different clocks coming up on the screen. I shot more than one bomb clock by accident.
I guess I'll try to beat the game later. I want to see the ending!

Simple and enjoyable, but could be so much better

The game is simple but it's fun to play. The robot may not have a lot of personality, but for some reason I quite liked the character. :)

The controls are simple as well, but at least they work without any flaws. This made the game so much more enjoyable. ^^
Maybe you should let the player advance the text with the space bar as well, that way we can keep our hands at the keyboard and don't have to use the mouse so often.

The elevator puzzle was a nice touch to the game, but maybe it was one or two screens too long.

When I got to the end fight I was really puzzled as I couldn't figure out what to do here. I could move around and dodge bullets (some still hit me, even though they flew by... hit detection seems to be a bit off here). But I couldn't hurt the final boss. Only time I hurt him was when the game told me to use the wind power again.

So, while this game IS enjoyable it leaves a lot to be desired. It would be really nice if I could use the items I get any time I want. That way you could introduce some screens where I have to use a special power item to beat it, which would make the game much better, imo.

EventHorizon responds:

Thanks for this useful review and for your advice, I wanted to put the space bar instead of the mouse but it caused problems so I prefer the mouse, in this game I wanted to add more features like the ones you listed but I had no more time also because I started this game too later!

Good layout

Your soundboard is done pretty good. The sounds are clear and easy to understand. However, there where three sounds that had some sort background noise: "Kneecap", "Lotta good... gun" and "What you looking at?" all had a strange noise just at the end of the sound file.

Anyway, I liked that you added the theme song for the scout, this is a nice touch. Some of the quotes from Scout also fit quite good to the music, so it's possible to create a "best of scout" song now. ^^

The layout of the soundboard is pretty nice. Some soundboards tend to be an awful mess and it's impossible to find a sound again, but your soundboard looks very clean and sorted. All the buttons have an easy to read text, so it's easy to find the sound you want to hear.

Basic

Looks like some kind of mock up for the "real" game to me. The graphics aren't what I would call "pretty". They look too simple and sometimes even quite sloppy.

I couldn't hear any sound effects, which made the game a bit boring to play. Some gunfire sounds and/or background music would've been a good touch.

While the enemies that spawn in front of me are easy to fight (simply keep the space bar pressed down) the enemies that spawn behind me are impossible to fight. They will always get at least one shot at me before I even have a chance to realize they are there. This makes the game impossible to beat. Enemies shouldn't be able to shoot while they still are off screen.

Games like Metal Slug are incredibly hard, but not one single enemy in this game is able to shoot at the player while he's still off screen. I suggest you take a good look at Metal Slug like games to know what I am talking about. You could also let such games inspire you to make a few more adjustments to your own game.
Right now all the enemies are on ground level. Why not have them spawn at some higher places like a rooftop or something like that? This way the game still can reach a high difficulty level and it becomes less repetitive.

austinplaneboy responds:

I had trouble with the rear enemies, myself. Heh. Also, I think I have played Metal Slug on XBLA(I'm not sure why it's called "Metal Slug", though). Your bug reports are appreciated and will be taken into consideration for the next update(or a "Remastered Edition") of this game. Thank you. (^_^)

Nice game

The unbelievable adventure of Nick and Corey continues. If I wouldn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it.

The mix between real life action scenes and action games is pretty good. The scenes in between the games aren't too long, though the games might have been a bit longer and maybe a bit more difficult, heh.

But anyway, the scenes are funny and the games are entertaining, so I guess everything is all right here.

The only thing that bothers me is that sometimes the voices create some static noises. Those are really annoying and hurt my ears.

Other than that: Good work!

MonoFlauta responds:

Other than that
great that you like the game!
