Unusual

Hm, the intro tune sounds very familiar, but I can't put my finger on it where I might have heard it...

Anyway, the intro is very nice, not only because the melody sounds somewhat familiar, but because it sounds very nice and kind of... promising. It just sounds as if it says: "Hey hold on, there's something good following!"

And something good follows. I like the mixture of the classical sounding melody and the more modern sounding drums.
It's definitely unusual, so I guess you can also call this track unique. :)

Ooh, very cool. Thanks for the review mate!

I was trying to do a mix of a 'orchestral rock ordeal' type thing. O-o

BUT! In any case, thanks again for the review!

Resident Evil?

I was playing a lot Resident Evil (the first part) lately, and this really reminds me of some of the tunes you can hear throughout the game. It has the same creepy atmosphere to it. Your nerves are frayed, even though there's no danger visible... but what's there behind the next corner? Oh... nothing...

I get the same feeling when listening to this track. Good thing that I have an Ink Ribbon, so I can save my game and come back later after I took some valerian... XD

Too bad the ending is kind of messed up. If anyone wants to use this in a flash, he has to edit the ending first. He has to either use a transition to the next song or fade it out at the end... it would be nice if the track itself would loop better.

Centrist responds:

xD, ah the days of RE.

I've been having some trouble with the whole looping thing, even if I export them in Reason, there always seems to be a little bit of space at the end that makes the snap noticeable.

I'll see what I can do to fix it up a bit. ^^
Thanks for the review guys!

Nice

I have a soft spot for scotland/anything related to scotland. I visited the northern part of the UK two times already and I liked it. Even though I normally detest mountains (and scotland has an awful lot of them ^^), I really like it.

Your song does indeed sound very "scottish", even though the sound of the bagpipes isn't too real. Sounds more like a midi, heh.

Aynway, the intro is pretty good with the drums and the bagpipes. I like how you slowly add more and more to the song, so that it builds up in a very nicely way.

The outro is a bit too abrupt in my opinion. Maybe a "build down" would sound a bit better here. But on the other hand with the cymbals at the end the song loops quite well.

Nice, but needs some "polishing"

I really like the drums here. They are very powerful and offer a very nice beat.
The guitars sound nice as well, the riff is very heavy and fits nicely to the drum beat.

Only problem is that everything here sounds so "loud". Sometimes the guitars are nearly drowned by the drums and sometimes the drums can hardly be heared. So this track needs a bit more equalizing to improve the overall sound quality of this submission.

sicjes responds:

Thanks for the feedback, really. I know where I am weak and will only improve with every new effort. I'm about to take a 4 month vacation to really practice and work on my music and other creative projects. Thanks again for your time

Hm...

The wave crashes actually sound pretty good here, so you can get the feeling to lay at a beach. Also the melody itself is nice and happy, so some sort of "vacation feeling" definitely is in this song. I don't know if you where aming for this sort of atmosphere, but it is there. ^^

However, maybe you should change the instrument that plays the melody, or change the pitch a bit. This high pitched tune really hurts in the ears after some time.

Nice song, but bad sound quality

As Fro stated, the sound quality really lets this song down. The song itself is pretty good, the drums are very nice, especially the "double bass drum" parts are amazing.

Also what this song really needs are some vocals. It seems as if the slower and quieter parts of this song just wait for the singer to start singing...
I could imagine some sort of "Opeth"-like vocals here, as the double bass parts really remind me of their song "Deliverance"

Relaxing

You have some very nice melodies in this song and it's pretty groovy, especially that melody that can be heard at 1:13.

Also, the song is really relaxing. I closed my eyes and listened to this a few times in a row, because it really helped me to relief my stress after a pretty tough day. :)

But I think there should be a few more elements in the song to make it a bit more interesting. Maybe some voice samples would be great. Just a male voice that says some random things would already do the trick.

la-yinn responds:

Haha, glad I could help you relief your stresses. :D

Some more effects and such would help, but I'm currently really working on some saxophone/trumpet melodies. Already have it planned out to give it a bit more of a jazzy feeling.

I've thought about vocals too, but I'm not to sure if it would work. I was going to try it out, but my microphones out of order at the moment so I guess I'll leave it out.

Thanks for the review!

Simple but great

A very simple track. One guitar and that's it. It's kinda hard to keep the listener interested in your track if you only make use of one single instrument. But you did an amazing job here.
The melody is very relaxing and especially the high notes make me... well, "happy". At least I listened to this track a few times in a row just because I wanted to hear the bits with the high notes again.

Would be great if some skilled singer would put vocals on this track, as I think it would sound even better with vocals. :)

loansindi responds:

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This piece has been kicking around in my brain for a long time, and I think there's a reason for that.

I really want to nail down a 'proper' version of this song and get some vocals on it. I think that'd make it badass.

A game I have yet to play

That's right, never played Chrono Trigger. But it's kinda hard to do so, because the game was never released in Europe (except for the DS-Version, but I don't own a DS).

Anyway, this is a very nice song. Sounds like something from the intro or it is a song after something bad had happened in the story line. The overall feeling of the song is kinda sad, even though it has it's happy moments where hope shines through...

I like the outro of the song. Ending on that note sounded a bit strange at first, but when I listened to it again it sounds pretty fitting there.

Cosmos8942 responds:

Was Chrono Cross released in Europe? That has many of the same tunes in it just with a more modernized feel overall. (seriously, that game is almost worth buying a DS just to play it o_o)

But I can't take all the credit, the original, in my opinion, is still better. But that could be simply because it was in the game when I heard it and well, you know...that sorta added to the feeling. Hope? BALDERDASH! Well, maybe not but thats an interesting way to put it.

On the outro I actually couldn't think of anything at the time so I replayed it a few times over and eventually came up with what I thought wasn't the greatest ending to any song. That is until I realized that it was, perhaps, a near-perfect ending for the piece. Like you said, doesn't feel like it fits but it grows on ya'.

Woo, lots o' reviews to catch up on, what can I say my internet was down for a bit there so catching up is a must.

Nice one

Never played the game, so I have no idea how the original version of this song sounds. But already in the intro I had the feeling that it most be a song for some Mario game, heh.

Rhythm and melodies are very nice in this track and the overall groove of the song is just amazing. But I think would have liked this a bit better if this wouldn't sound like a Midi, nostalgia or not. :P

Cosmos8942 responds:

Geez you people, sit down, shut up, AND PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!1! Its quite good :3. Haha, you already figured it was for a Mario game? What good ears you have young one :). But seriously, it is an addicting game, consider it Tetris with a twist...and without the super fanatic fan drama.

But since this was originally an 8-bit song (NES anyone?) I should say that though it does sound a bit like a MIDI just imagine if I sat down and said to myself..."You know, I think I will make this sound EXACTLY like the original, just with more flavor [see below for the recipe :o)." I think we would have a incredible NES song up here instead of one that actually sounds better overall. I might go back and remake this one using an orchestra and [perhaps] choir with Brass elements but it is hard to say right now. Frankly though, my biggest excuse is that I like to (when I remix something for the first time) stick to the original feeling the piece had. That is my philosophy, remix something all that you like but keep something of the original feeling intact. The easiest way to do this is make it sound like the original. It is a fine line, but I think I find that line quite often ^^.

Thanks for the review once again 'Review Request Club" and you 'Haggard'. Its appreciated that you guys (and girls) take the time to go through these. But I have to say, I'm always worried about a low score...call me paranoid XD.
