A game I have yet to play

That's right, never played Chrono Trigger. But it's kinda hard to do so, because the game was never released in Europe (except for the DS-Version, but I don't own a DS).

Anyway, this is a very nice song. Sounds like something from the intro or it is a song after something bad had happened in the story line. The overall feeling of the song is kinda sad, even though it has it's happy moments where hope shines through...

I like the outro of the song. Ending on that note sounded a bit strange at first, but when I listened to it again it sounds pretty fitting there.

Cosmos8942 responds:

Was Chrono Cross released in Europe? That has many of the same tunes in it just with a more modernized feel overall. (seriously, that game is almost worth buying a DS just to play it o_o)

But I can't take all the credit, the original, in my opinion, is still better. But that could be simply because it was in the game when I heard it and well, you know...that sorta added to the feeling. Hope? BALDERDASH! Well, maybe not but thats an interesting way to put it.

On the outro I actually couldn't think of anything at the time so I replayed it a few times over and eventually came up with what I thought wasn't the greatest ending to any song. That is until I realized that it was, perhaps, a near-perfect ending for the piece. Like you said, doesn't feel like it fits but it grows on ya'.

Woo, lots o' reviews to catch up on, what can I say my internet was down for a bit there so catching up is a must.

Nice one

Never played the game, so I have no idea how the original version of this song sounds. But already in the intro I had the feeling that it most be a song for some Mario game, heh.

Rhythm and melodies are very nice in this track and the overall groove of the song is just amazing. But I think would have liked this a bit better if this wouldn't sound like a Midi, nostalgia or not. :P

Cosmos8942 responds:

Geez you people, sit down, shut up, AND PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!1! Its quite good :3. Haha, you already figured it was for a Mario game? What good ears you have young one :). But seriously, it is an addicting game, consider it Tetris with a twist...and without the super fanatic fan drama.

But since this was originally an 8-bit song (NES anyone?) I should say that though it does sound a bit like a MIDI just imagine if I sat down and said to myself..."You know, I think I will make this sound EXACTLY like the original, just with more flavor [see below for the recipe :o)." I think we would have a incredible NES song up here instead of one that actually sounds better overall. I might go back and remake this one using an orchestra and [perhaps] choir with Brass elements but it is hard to say right now. Frankly though, my biggest excuse is that I like to (when I remix something for the first time) stick to the original feeling the piece had. That is my philosophy, remix something all that you like but keep something of the original feeling intact. The easiest way to do this is make it sound like the original. It is a fine line, but I think I find that line quite often ^^.

Thanks for the review once again 'Review Request Club" and you 'Haggard'. Its appreciated that you guys (and girls) take the time to go through these. But I have to say, I'm always worried about a low score...call me paranoid XD.

Nice, but doesn't loop too well

The rhythm here is very nice. It's amazing what you created here even though the song is not even a minute long.
I found myself instantly moving to the music, which is always a good sign, heh.

Too bad this doesn't loop too well. The change over from the end to the beginning of the song is just too noticeable.

SymbolCymbal responds:

yeah i wasn't even paying much attention to the ending and beginning and how it would mesh. Its funny whenever your making a loop like this, after a while it sounds fine. But to listen to it for the first time anyone can completely hear that it doesn't loop well.
Im glad it got you moving though.

Thank you very much for the review

Generic sounds, but good song

The intro doesn't sound that good. Much too generic sounds that you used there. So I was positively surprised when the song went on what you created with those generic sounds.

You have some very nice melodies in here and the background beat is nice as well. Also, the build up of the song is done in a very good way. It starts off with only the drum beat, then slowly more and more things are added until the "full" song can be heard. Too bad that the song ends so abrupt. At first I thought the song had stopped playing for some strange reasong, but then I heard the intro again... so yeah, the song should be a bit longer and you have to work on the outro.
Maybe taking away the instruments slowly (kind of an "reversed intro") could work here.

Very relaxing

As others have already stated, this is indeed very relaxing. Just the kind of song I needed right now. I'm a bit ill (a cold again) and have just been a little upset over silly things. That isn't exactly what I need to get rid of my cold, so a little relaxing stuff to sip my tea to is much better for my health. ^^

I like the intro of this song. The deep and short tones set a pretty nice atmosphere already. When then the higher instruments set in it all sounds very nice and indeed a bit comical, as Oyajitchi-sama has stated in his review.

Too bad the song is so short, but as this is work in progress I guess you will add more to this later.

loansindi responds:

Thanks for the review. I do hope to work on the length of this piece.

Starts off slow, gets better

First of all, why do you want to put this in a genre so desperatly? Why this stereotyped thinking? Just create your own "Genre" and be happy. :P

The intro is very slow and a tad bit boring, to be honest. After the very first riff I hoped it would continue like this, but instead the song slows down after the opening piano solo, which was a bit disappointing for me. Also the flute there at 0:25 sounds a bit strange.

But after 32 seconds when the song picks up it gets a lot better. I really like the rhythm you create in this part, it reminds me a little bit of the soundtrack for "Requiem for a dream".
Also, the strange sounding flute fits in very nice there with the other instruments.

Too bad the outro is so bland, it let's the nice song down a bit.

Step responds:

Wow, that's some nice criticism :). You're not the only one to complain about that outro, and about that intro too. I've already got them fixed, and will update the song when the all the members review me. Thanks for such a great review! :D.

Another thing a mac can't do

Or at least I've never heard a song made entirely with Mac OS sounds. XD
Also, quite a lot of Windows Songs to review lately, I think this is the 3rd one in about 3 weeks? -.-

Anyway, this is a really nice song and it's amazing that you managed to create such a nice beat plus some very nice melodies with only windows sounds. Towards the end it gets all a bit hectic and pretty loud (at around 3:50), but the "question-answer-game" after that is just priceless!

{ Review Request Club }

Step responds:

Yup, same here XD. Yeah, Windows songs are the latest trend :P. I was never good with melodies, but these took me really long and I'm glad they came out OK. There are some really catchy melodies in here which I was tempted to use in other songs of mine, but thought against it :P. That Question-Answer thing didn't come out as well as planned, but it's still kinda cool anyway. Might update it soon. By the way, Hectic is my middle name XP.

Nice melodies

You have some very nice melodies in here. Very catchy and they never get boring, even on the fifth playthrough of the song.

I also like that you added some varity to the song by taking a break from the main beat during the middle of the song.

Only thing I didn't like that much was the outro. The song kind of just ends there, which sounds a bit strange. But sadly I have no idea how you could improve this. Fade outs are overdone and don't sound better than what you did here. And adding another part for the outro might ruin the nice and happy atmosphere the song creates.

ErikMcClure responds:

Thanks, a pity about the outro :c

Good

I don't know the original, but I guess it's from one of the many Zelda games, right?

Anyway, I think this sounds pretty awesome. Especially the strings together with the piano create a very nice atmosphere. Together with the added rain and storm effects I get the feeling that I'm sitting in my warm home with a cup of hot chocolate (or tea) while outside it is storming and raining (which it has a lot in the last few days where I live ^^).

Oh, and I wouldn't bother with reviewing my audio submissions, they aren't very good at all (and one of them is a "cover" of John Cages "4'33"", so there can't be heard anything in the first place. ^^).

Lublub194 responds:

Haha. Exactly what I was going for! Thanks good sir :)

P.S. Hot chocolate is so much better then tea :P

I will review your audio. Simply because I can :D

Thanks for the review man!

Nice atmosphere

This song creates a really nice atmosphere, but the quality of the sound is rather low, so it's very hard to understand anything in this song.

Yet, the atmosphere created by the instruments and the effects on the vocals are really nice, it is very relaxing and at the same time a bit creepy.

So yeah, all this song needs is a better sound quality and I'm sure I would rate this 9 or even 10. But sadly I can only give this a 7 for atmosphere and effort.
