Good song, nice idea

This is a very good song. I like the idea of turning "The Crucible" into a song. The medival instruments are very fitting here, since the play takes place in the 17th cenutry, after all.

I also like the transitions between the various parts. It sounds as if the song is over, but just before the last note of the previous part rings out the next part starts. I like that a lot.

Maybe the first part "Dancing in the Woods" could have a slightly more mystic atmosphere to it. Right now it sounds a bit too happy to me and not like some occultic thing going on in the depths of the woods.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into a more mystic approach to dancing in the woods during the happier bits (perhaps some minor stuff).

Funny

This is silly, but very funny at the same time. I feel a bit reminded of the Adam's Family by the melodies here and I found myself tapping the foot along to the rhythm.

This track could very well be part of a game, some sort of comical horror game (if that does make any sense...).

Oh yeah, the part where your voice comes in is my favorite, haha.

JPRixdorfer responds:

Well, silly and funny was pretty much what I was going for with this one, so it seems like mission accomplished. I never thought of it as reminding of anything horror related, but comical horror might just work :) and the Adams Family should be the perfect example of a well working horror / comedy genre clash.
The voice part was a very late addition to the song. It existed for about a year when I realized putting high pitched voices in there might make it 15% sillyer, so I did.

Thanks for the review! *hug*

Good track, muffled sound

This is a very interesting song. I like the vocal samples here a lot, they add a very special note to the track.

However, I think the song has a weird sound to it. Everything sounds a bit muffled, don't know if this was intentional or not. But I don't like it too much.

BulimicLemur responds:

Yeah, I agree- I hear the muffled sound you're talking about. I'm not sure why that happened in this track eh. I may have just turned the bass up too much or compressed it too much.

Thanks for the critique

Good atmosphere

Very nice track. I like the thoughtful and somewhat sad atmosphere this song creates.

While listening to this I was reminded of the TV series "Twin Peaks", which has quite some atmospheric tracks. The melody during the middle of the song even sounds a bit like the intro to said series. At least to me, heh.

I think the ending needs some work, however. It just is too quiet, in my opinion, followed by a few seconds of silence. It doesn't really fit to the song. I think you should keep the bass line playing until the end. Maybe "softening" it a bit, so it doesn't overpower the chimes at the end.

OK, thanks. Never saw that series. I'll check it out.

Percussions are overdone but song is still nice

The track starts off very nicely with those bleeping sounds and the nice bass in the background. I also like the melody here a lot.

The beating sounds are a tad bit too loud in my opinion as they overpower the melodies. During the middle of the song the percussion sounds are a bit overdone, I think. Less is more here.

The outro is done in a nice way again. The looping works good, except that the ending of the loop is much louder than the beginning. Maybe you could lower the volume towards the end of the track a bit?

Oh yeah, during the middle of the song, the melodies remind me a lot of the game "International Karate +". God, I loved that game... ^^

Thanks a lot for the review! Like I told Coop, I especially appreciate your appraisal of the weird noise effects I smothered the middle of the track with, since it was an experiment, and it's always good to hear peoples' reactions to things that aren't often done. I'll tone it down a bit, since people seem to agree that it's a little much. I'll take your advice on lowering the volume in the outro a bit too. Thanks for the input!

Good intro

The intro reminded me of some old movies and/or videogames. I don't know why, but it somehow has a very distinctive 80's feel to it.

I was a bit disappointed at first that the song didn't continue with that nice atmosphere, but the spacey and more happy melody that followed after wasn't too bad either.

However, around the 2 minute mark, where that techno-/dance-like melody is playing again after the nice break the song lost a lot of it's appeal to me. But this is just my personal opinion and a matter of taste and it won't reflect the review score too much.
Technically (like mixing, mastering and stuff) the song is very good from the beginning to the end. All the instruments can be heard just fine and I also like that you break up the main melody from time to time.

I also like how the song ends on that hold note. Sounds much better this way than a fade out, in my opinion.

Thanks for the review! I'm sorry that you don't like it, but I appreciate the honesty!

Awesome

Oh man, I really wish I would play more Metroid (or, at all. I never played it. Only the first part for some stages). But anyway, it sounds amazing. The guitar work is great, the mixing is done pretty cool and... well, it just sounds epic. ^^

Only thing that could use some work are the drums. They sound suprisingly weak in the first half of the song, especially compared to the heavy guitars.

Step responds:

Hey, thanks for reviewing!

Hm, I'm surprised you don't like the drums. I quite liked them :P. But I guess they might be too quiet. I spent ages fiddling around with their volume.

Oh and I never played any Metroid games at all. I barely even know what they look like. I just like the music, haha.

Really glad you enjoyed it mate. Thanks a lot!

Strange

I think the intro is a bit too long. It sounds pretty cool with the deep 8-bit-like sounds, but it drags on for too long, I think.

The sound after that is hard to describe, it sounds a bit like broken machine gun fire, but it sounds cool in a way.

I didn't like the part in the middle (at around 0:33 to 0:39). It interrupts the song, but the song continues just like before the interruption. I think you should either get rid of the middle part or change around the second part a bit more, to make it more different from the first part.

Thanks for the constructive criticism and compliments. At the moment, I am sort of trying to develop my own unique sound, so the compliments help a lot!

Cold

Really slow song, didn't expect that when I read "Trance" in the File Information. But a surpirse is always nice.

I like the slow and pretty cold atmosphere you create with this song. I think the "coldness" is created mostly by the high pitched background melody. As if someone was playing this on icicles, heh. Also, the main melody is so slow as if it is nearly freezing to a motionless tone complex.

Really nice song!

lazy-dave responds:

Lol I didn't know Trance was supposed to be faster, I guess I just think slow when I think Trance. I felt the same way with the icicles, and I thought it fit well with the cold vibe so I used it, glad you noticed that.
Thanks for the review, I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it!

Good song

The intro of this song reminds me of some old german science fiction series (Commander Perkins), heh.
The song is pretty nice. It sounds very deep and dirty and yet the vocals and the higher pitched melodies make it somewhat relaxing as well. Very interesting mix.

I also like the progression of the song. It starts off pretty much "leight weight" and then slowy becomes more heavier towards the end. This makes the song very interesting to listen to and the listener won't get bored halfway through the song. Nice work!

durn responds:

I was going for a more relaxed feel to this since that's just what I do, I guess. Lol. I paid a lot of attention to progression in this track and made sure to mix in elements between parts to lend to transition. Thanks for the review, Haggard. :)
